Chairmans Choice (Books)

  • Hermann Hesse: Klingsors Last Summer
Three short stories. All good, two excellent. (****)
  • Hermann Hesse: Narcissus and Goldmund

    Hermann Hesse: Narcissus and Goldmund
"Perhaps, he thought, the root of all art, and perhaps also of all intellectual activity, is the fear of death. We fear it, we shudder at the empheral nature of all things, we grieve to see the constant cycle of fading flowers and falling leaves and are aware in our own hearts of the certainty that we too are empheral and will soon fade away" (*****)

  • Dave Broom: Rum
a whole book dedicated to the worlds greatest spirit and my one and only tipple....It helped create capitalism and colonialism and is still there as we transcend into the global economy. Rum was slaverys currency, was at the heart of prohibition and in recent years has been at the centre of international trade wars. What a fantastic book.
  • Hermann Hesse: The Prodigy
Me and Hesse have connected on many levels and i have to say that for me the mans works are everything i could wish for from an author. Luckily i had left reading his books until an age where i could appreciate them more. His descriptions of 'the journey' through life are breathtaking and are for me essential reading
  • John Beaulieu: Music & Sound in The Healing Arts

John Beaulieu: Music & Sound in The Healing Arts
"By meditating and experimenting with the monochord, Pythagoras explored overtones and their relationship to nature, geometric proportion and sacred sound" The most informative book i have read on the power and importance of sound, music, frequency or whatever you want to call it...read it. Top Sounds

  • Marvin Gaye - Whats Happening Brother

    Whats Happening Brother
    Marvin Gaye: What's Going On

What more can be said about this legendary prophetic work that hasnt already been said. I grew up listening to this album but it was only recently that i really dug deeper into the lyrics. The first and only? piece of popular music that echoes Carsons landmark work Silent Spring. (*****)

  • Curtis Mayfield - I Plan To Stay A Believer

I Plan To Stay A Believer
    Curtis Mayfield: Curtis LIve

Curtis..........my number one artist. the mans music has been with me since the beginning. more like a surrogate family member than just another singer. Curtis should be in everyones collection, too many groundbreaking, earth moving songs to list on here. Suffice to say that Curtis has inspired and influenced my life on many occasions with his unique blend of lyrics, music and production. Without Curtis there wouldnt be the 'Soul' that we know today. Legend. (****)

  • Bill Withers - Hope she'll be happier

    Hope she'll be happier
Bill Withers: Live At Carneige Hall

Bill Withers....BIG down Circus Street. (Along with Curtis, Bobby, Marvin and Stevie) This album demonstrates Bill Withers at his best. FULL to the brim with sentiment and emotion. Even though he's known for lovely day, lean on me and aint no sunshine tunes like better off dead, grandmas hands, use me, make love to your mind, friend of mine (too many to list) show what a fantastic song writer, singer and performer the brother is. Part of the chairmans musical heritage and very proud of it i am too. thanks to T Blue for this part of my musical education

  • Sam Cooke - Bring It On Home To Me

Bring It On Home To Me
Sam Cooke: LIVE AT THE HARLEM SQUARE CLUB

ive just listened to it front to back for the hundreth time and what can i say about this performance. if i could travel through time this would be my first stop. moving, from beginning to end. NEVER fails to 'raise the spirit. the first three tunes rip it up. if you thought you knew 'Chain Gang'....or Cupid.....The 'spirit' was definately out there in the front row for this performance. words cant do it justice. EVERY one a winner. Shelved by RCA? for twenty years!! Mr Soul at his peak. (*****)

  • Ry Cooder - Chinito Chinito

    Chinito Chinito

I was reading a poem by the kid (Wordsworth) and was moved by its quality. As for Dickens i admire his ability to 'Tell It Like It Is'
for me the blog is about social commentary.

Johnny

On the subject of creative dilemas, I would suggest one should always follow their intuition.

Though I don't know what Dickins and Wordsworth has to do with your blog.
