Chairmans Choice (Books)

  • Hermann Hesse: Klingsors Last Summer
Three short stories. All good, two excellent. (****)
  • Hermann Hesse: Narcissus and Goldmund

    Hermann Hesse: Narcissus and Goldmund
"Perhaps, he thought, the root of all art, and perhaps also of all intellectual activity, is the fear of death. We fear it, we shudder at the empheral nature of all things, we grieve to see the constant cycle of fading flowers and falling leaves and are aware in our own hearts of the certainty that we too are empheral and will soon fade away" (*****)

  • Dave Broom: Rum
a whole book dedicated to the worlds greatest spirit and my one and only tipple....It helped create capitalism and colonialism and is still there as we transcend into the global economy. Rum was slaverys currency, was at the heart of prohibition and in recent years has been at the centre of international trade wars. What a fantastic book.
  • Hermann Hesse: The Prodigy
Me and Hesse have connected on many levels and i have to say that for me the mans works are everything i could wish for from an author. Luckily i had left reading his books until an age where i could appreciate them more. His descriptions of 'the journey' through life are breathtaking and are for me essential reading
  • John Beaulieu: Music & Sound in The Healing Arts

John Beaulieu: Music & Sound in The Healing Arts
"By meditating and experimenting with the monochord, Pythagoras explored overtones and their relationship to nature, geometric proportion and sacred sound" The most informative book i have read on the power and importance of sound, music, frequency or whatever you want to call it...read it. Whats Happening Brother
    Marvin Gaye: What's Going On

I Plan To Stay A Believer
    Curtis Mayfield: Curtis LIve

Curtis..........my number one artist. the mans music has been with me since the beginning. more like a surrogate family member than just another singer. Curtis should be in everyones collection, too many groundbreaking, earth moving songs to list on here. Suffice to say that Curtis has inspired and influenced my life on many occasions with his unique blend of lyrics, music and production. Without Curtis there wouldnt be the 'Soul' that we know today. Legend. (****)

The Sensitivity of Children to Electromagnetic Fields -- Kheifets et al. 116 (2): e303 -- Pediatrics

Link: The Sensitivity of Children to Electromagnetic Fields -- Kheifets et al. 116 (2): e303 -- Pediatrics.

Had to rise from my recent blog slumber to bring you this.
Will you read it? unlikely but i can't use that as an excuse not to lead horse to water....the study was funded by, (among others) the WHO, (not the band), which is especially significent in as much as it represents an establishment viewpoint.

I'm quoting a few paragraphs to give you an overview....first up

"Numerous studies have evaluated developmental effects of RF fields on mammals, birds, and other nonmammalian species.(53,54) These studies have shown clearly that RF fields are teratogenic at exposure levels that are high enough to cause significant increases in temperature. There is no consistent evidence of effects at nonthermal exposure levels, although only a few studies have evaluated possible effects on postnatal development using sensitive end points such as behavioral effects.

Secondly:

When risks are complex, an established cause-effect relationship is absent, or the scientific findings are not robustly quantifiable, the need for timely preventive action makes a precautionary approach an essential part of policy making. Many societies believe that this is particularly true regarding children (including the unborn child): they represent the future of the society, have the potential for longer exposure than adults, and yet are less able to manage their own risk.

Also of interest is the disclaimer.

"The opinions in this paper are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not represent the position of the World Health Organization".

and the conflict of interest.

Dr Kheifets worked and consulted for Electric Power Research Institute and Utilities (Palo Alto, CA), and Dr Saunders worked for the National Radiation Protection Board (Oxfordshire, United Kingdom).

The bottom line for me is that the authors of the paper

"strongly recommended additional laboratory and epidemiologic studies relating to childhood leukemia and ELF magnetic field exposure"

It will probably be classed as inconclusive, not enough evidence, not done using the double bluff, (blind) method etc and we will have to wait until the 'chickens come home to roost' for any action to be taken which, by that time will be too late...or not if you happen to be in the pharmaceutical industry and there are new and extremley profitable drugs to manage disease/illness.

Believe me exposure to fields/rays/waves/frequencies do affect cells at the biological level and will cause future problems. there are simple instruments for measuring the level of exposure to these fields, (i use a TriField meter), that demonstrate the presence of them. What steps you take are up to you.

Henri Bergson:Creative Evolution

Link: Henri Bergson.

following on from the 'spiritual chicks' post regarding time as illusion and in response to Johnny's comment on Bergsons ideas of space & time, below is an extract from Swami Krishnananda's critique on Creative Evolution

"Bergson's consciousness evolves because it is the individual mind moving with the operations of matter in a world of space and time. Evolution is impossible without space-time relations, for evolution is causation, whether we conceive it as linear or organic. And space and time are phenomenal forms, they cannot be equated with Reality. Bergson unnecessarily emphasises the importance of time and makes it non-spatial, calling it an eternal duration which he identifies with Reality.

It is impossible to conceive of time without space, and time does not cease to be a relative phenomenon merely because another word, viz., duration, is substituted for it. Space and time constitute a single continuum, and there can be no such thing as duration without time. Bergson thinks that there can be absence in space and yet there can be movement in time. This is a dogmatic assertion which cannot bear the test of experience, reason or observation. There cannot be succession or duration without space. Time cannot become Reality, for it has no existence independent of spatial and causal relations. Nor can it be said that causal change itself is Reality, for all change implies a changeless being as its ground".

Hmmmmmmmmmmm......................needs digesting. Thanks again to Johnny for understanding, inspiring and valued support. I'm off to read up on Bergson !!!

The Spiritual Chicks: If time is an illusion why is my past still pissing me off

Link: The Spiritual Chicks: Kick-Ass Content.

While browsing on this fine sunday morning i found myself at this site. I am logging it because of the reference to time being an illusion, (my feelings too).

Check it:

"It’s not a philosophical statement to say that everything happens in the present---it’s the truth.  Think about it.  We remember the past and make predictions for the future all in the present moment.  We experience reality only in the now.  For millennia, mystics (and more recently, scientists) have informed humankind that time is an illusion.  But we’re so tied to our stories about the past (you know, how badly we were treated as children, teenagers, etc.) and our desires for the future (yes, all those worthwhile goals such as financial abundance, powerful positions, etc.) that we can’t see that what we focus our attention on in the moment is our reality.  Every time we review painful memories from childhood, we give them life and confirm our sense of powerlessness.  While we pray for more money in the future, we do nothing more than affirm our feelings of lack.  So, what’s the answer?  Stop dreaming, stop thinking, stop remembering?  Well, yes, as a matter of fact.  If time is merely a construct, we can choose to deconstruct it.  Without time, there is no death and we are free to simply be. The function of time is to get us to realize that it doesn’t exist.  That just might be the key to enlightenment".

One of the points i would like to make is; how is time defined? or even, for who is time defined...of course the answer must be humanity.

Could it be argued that time, (in its popular meaning), is in fact a mechanism for control. After all what does 9-5 or "you're late" mean to anyone or thing other than the wage slave?.........

All life is cyclical while time as we know it is linear and therefore unnatural.
This is one of those subjects that i have a genuine interest in as in my humble opinion it's not the only illusion played on the unsuspecting, wealth also springs to mind.

As for 'enlightenment' i'm not sure whether understanding time is the key to it.
Personally i don't subscribe to the idea of understanding anything because if living is in the moment surely there is no need to waste time analyzing it.

I would love to hear some thoughts on this so how about a little communication...it's a two way street you know !!

PLoS Clinical Trials : A Peer-reviewed, Open-access Journal - Patient Safety Requires a New Way to Publish Clinical Trials

Link: PLoS Clinical Trials : A Peer-reviewed, Open-access Journal - Patient Safety Requires a New Way to Publish Clinical Trials.

Shocking indictment of the way clinical trials are, and have been, performed to deceive the public into believing that medical treatment is objective and evidence based when in reality it is nothing but a self regulating mess.

Hold this quote from the former editor of the British Medical Journal a publication that financially relies heavily on the publishing of these works of fiction

"The way medical journals publish the results of clinical trials has become a serious threat to public health. You may find this assertion shocking and counterintuitive, but we hope that by the end of this short article you will agree and will join us in arguing for the better way of making medical information publicly available that we outline". (Smith R, Roberts I)

If you want to take responsibility for your health then it might be an idea to read this so that the next time you go to the doctor and he fills out a prescription for poison you know where the 'evidence' comes from......The people that made it and have a vested interest in ensuring a positive outcome of these clinical trials.

Change..........makes you want to hustle.

Time keeps on running and passing

I cant believe that my last post was in March !!.......i know time is an illusion and all that but phew it still flies.

Since then much water has gone under the bridge the most distressing of which is my eldest breaking both wrists in a garden accident..I know, thats kids for you but when your business  is responding to masssive changes and the wolfs dont leave off knocking on your door its a challenge and no mistake.

Also i have been kicking around the idea of multiple blogs, one for each arena.

Health/Music/Business/Philosophy

This way i can focus on each topic and install some discipline in my 'butterfly mind'  or put another way....

papa told mama let that boy boogie woogie, cos its in 'im and its got to come out

Watch the ride....
